... but as far as credit card numbers go, "Maybe... uh.. we don't know. ;-|"For over a week what started as 'technical difficulties/maintenance', and finally later became "external intrusion", has been the cause of the Playstation Network outage. The real reason known to the hacking scene all along: custom firmware allowed hackers to essentially turn their Playstation 3 into a debug/dev console which gave them access to a whole slew of yummy options and functions. Eventually hackers got their systems online and a buttload of stuff - from rampant piracy to personal account information - was compromised. Earlier Sony finally admitted that hackers were the cause, but it wasn't until recently today they came clean and announced that personal user information was indeed compromised. They haven't given a definitive answer about credit card information, because they "don't know". Sony says that they have hired a recognized security firm to investigate this security breach. I wonder if it's HBGary? LoL~! Thanks to the whole PSN downage coupled with ridiculous anti-piracy measures (surprise!), quite a number of games have been rendered unplayable - and not just online ones. Sony says if you have entered your credit information into your account, you should actively monitor your credit report. Full story at the link below.
“We have discovered that between April 17 and April 19, 2011, certain PlayStation Network and Qriocity service user account information was compromised in connection with an illegal and unauthorized intrusion into our network. In response to this intrusion, we have:
- Temporarily turned off PlayStation Network and Qriocity services;
- Engaged an outside, recognized security firm to conduct a full and complete investigation into what happened; and
- Quickly taken steps to enhance security and strengthen our network infrastructure by re-building our system to provide you with greater protection of your personal information.”
